The Zen Garden

Kyoto is famous for its teples and garden. 

Some of these gardens reflect aristocratic or Pure Land influences

Many of Kyoto,s finest gardens, however , are attached to Zen temples and and were designed by Zen monks and their patrons in the medieval period

The garden designer could use trees , shrubs , moss , water , waterfalls and bridges

Or he could restrict himself to stone and gravel , much like the ink painter who rejected color 

Such sand and stone gardens can be viewed as three - dimensional monochrome landscapes , with the gravel representing water and the rocks mountains or clouds , or enjoyed as abstract sculptures
